An in-person visit by a team from New City Church results in two very needy children joining our orphanage/school. The team spent their first day ministering to our kids and staff by teaching, sharing the gospel, playing, and helping to cook a meal. They witnessed poverty and how PPMU addresses it firsthand. Their hearts were deeply moved.
On their second day, Innocent took our guests to the hill country to distribute food and clothing to the Batwa tribe. The Batwa are one of the oldest surviving indigenous tribes in Africa. They are considered "conservation refugees" since the Ugandan government moved them off ancestral forest lands to make way for national parks and mountain gorilla tourism. Now the Batwa live on the edge of society, etching out their existence off the land.
PPMU often selects the Batwa as monthly food recipients from our Gleaning Ministry. The church team’s hearts were moved as they handed out the much needed and appreciated food and clothing. The team experienced what one member called, "poverty on poverty." It was this that God used to move the team to take further action. More needed to be done and could be done for the children of the Batwa. The team asked, “If we become monthly donors, would PPMU add two children from the Batwa to our orphanage/school?”
Our Board of Directors wholeheartedly agreed and after arrangements were made with the girl's caregivers, five-year-old Bridget, and four-year-old Zabu joined our student body. The girls were malnourished and infected with a parasite called "Jiggers or Tungiasis." The jigger burrows itself into the bottom of its host's foot. It is painful and can lead to secondary infections. If not treated, it can be fatal. Our onsite school nurse is currently treating the jiggers and the girls are already starting to thrive. They now have nutritious meals, medical care, and lots of love from staff and students alike.
Would you pray for these little ones, Bridget and Zabu? While this change is lifesaving, they are adjusting to a whole new environment and people. They have never slept in their own bed, had access to clean water, medical help, or used electricity before. They are God’s little ones, and He has big plans for their lives and the Batwa!
Currently, our ministry serves 164 children K-7th grade and every dollar we receive is used for their spiritual, educational, emotional, and physical development. You too can make a difference in the life of a child. Become a monthly donor today! It will be one of the best investments you ever make.
