One of PPMU's fundraising efforts this January resulted in seven new milk cows bringing our current herd to a total of 22! Donors stepped up to buy cows when they learned two things:
1. Increasing our herd supports our self-sustainability goals because excess milk from the cows can be sold for profit to support ministry expenses, and
2. We name newly purchased cows after their donor!
Our new seven are affectionately named Angela, Diana, Karly, Kiki, Kim, Lois, and CiCi. We thank each family who donated for the purchase of a cow. Earlier in the year, the cost of one cow was $500 (US), but now the cost is $700 (US) due to the economic crisis in Uganda.
Cows are brought to a central location in Kabale once a month and sold. Our Director of Ministries, Innocent Mucunguzi negotiated the best possible price and then our veterinarian examined each cow to ensure they were as healthy as possible. The cows were loaded onto a truck and then transported to our pasture where they were acclimated with our current herd. As long as they have lush green grass to munch on, they are quite content.
The cows will need to be bred and have calves before they begin producing milk. Since these cows are new to our current herd, we can breed them with our own bull at no cost. Normally, when males are born, we fatten them up and resell them for milkers. On average, three males will get us two milkers. Please pray for the cows to become pregnant quickly as new calves also increase our herd! More milkers equal more milk for the kids and self-sustainable income.
